what we do

Music for the Many offers instrumental tuition to children in schools in Todmorden and surrounding areas. All our services are free of charge to families and schools.

We identify barriers to music education and find ways to overcome these barriers, whether they arise from poverty, culture, social environment, family circumstances, learning difficulties or disabilities.

Our tutors are all professional musicians who are also experienced, highly skilled and creative teachers. Our tutors train and support our children and young people in the context of orchestras and other ensembles and give them weekly, targetted individual tuition on their instruments, which currently include flute, recorder, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, guitar, tabla, piano, violin and cello. All this work takes place in the children’s schools, both during school time and after school, so that all children have the opportunity to take part.

We provide instruments for children to use at home and in school in cases where children do not already have access to instruments. We also repair and maintain instruments where necessary. There is no charge for loan, repair and maintenance of instruments.

We give our pupils a variety of performance opportunities in different venues and alongside different musicians. We celebrate their musicianship with the whole community.

We present monthly public concerts given by professional musicians from a wide variety of genres. Admission to our own concerts is by donation, with all proceeds going to fund our work with the children.

We raise money to fund our work. You can donate online here.

We campaign for equal opportunities in music education. You can join the campaign on facebook or on twitter.
